Ahoy, Grey Havens!

So I checked out this book from the library last Wednesday that was about how to make animal monster things out of socks, and because I used up all my blog energy last night writing about how to make pillows, I’m going to talk about that.  My husband and I picked up some cute socks from Target and then I took that stuff with me when we went up to Des Moines for the holiday.

People, it is frankly shocking how productive I am when I don’t have access to the internet.  Perhaps I should take a cue from that?  Yes, I pined for unfettered access to the internet last week, but I also had time to hand sew “Claude” from Stupid Sock Creatures, which according to the book was not one of the easier creatures.

Side note: As I’m typing this I’m also sort of watching the last half hour or so from Return of the King on TNT, the part where Frodo wakes up in bed and all the hobbits come and bounce on his bed in a fit of homoerotic ecstasy, and Gandalf laughs and laughs in such a seemingly jolly way, and I just realized Gandalf sounds exactly like Falcor from The Neverending Story where he goes “AW HAW HAW HAW I’m a LUCK dragon!”  What up, Faramir?!

I remember when I saw that in the theater and I felt actually embarrassed to be there when it got to the scene when everybody bows to the four midgets and then I kept thinking, any minute now, this is ending, and it was still like another half hour after that.  I liked the soundtrack on this third one the best, but I’ve only seen the film like twice.  Compared to how when The Two Towers came out on DVD, my roommate and I were watching it like three times a week for a while there.  The rest of the trilogy was pretty good, but the last part of the last movie was just awful.  Geez.  We get it, Frodo is damaged and he and 500 year old Bilbo have to go on the big boat!

Anyway, as I was saying, when I had no internet I got a lot of shit done.  I found it surprisingly easy to motivate to do stuff when I couldn’t be goofing off on Facebook or checking my subscriptions on Google Reader or whatever.  I performed some repairs on my mother-in-law’s favorite duffle bag, sewed two of those little pillowcases, finished my sock creature, which was several hours worth of hand sewing, made the nicest pincushion ever so my mother-in-law would have one to use with her little sewing machine, and also got through almost the entirety of Jimmy Norton’s new book.   No way do I normally use my time outside work that productively!

So I’m thinking now that maybe I should move my computer somewhere I won’t be as tempted to just plop in front of it for so long at a time.  As soon as I figure out how to rearrange things to make that happen.

Here’s the creature I made.  I renamed him Murray because he wasn’t the original creature from the book anymore when I was through with him.  And also the pincushion.  I guess you can tell my favorite color is green.

It is amazing! Every once in a while I go a week without using the computer very much and then it is a shock how much stuff I get done.

A good way to promote not dicking around on the Internet is to turn your computer off when you’re not using it. That way, when you want to use the computer, you’ll have to turn it on and wait for it to boot up, so it’ll set a bar for what’s important enough to bother waiting for it to boot. And it saves energy!

This is a terrific idea! I might have to start doing that - I was thinking of figuring out a way to get the computer set up on a desk instead of the coffee table I have it on now - and then it would even be more out of the way, too.
