Tonight, since my boyfriend and I still have not settled on an official wedding date, we began doing some thinking about what might be a good day to do this thing. The date we currently use as an anniversary is August 7, which was a day during the summer before my junior year of high school on which we clumsily declared our love for one another. However, because August 7 is probably not a good choice because this year it falls on a Thursday, and while we had planned to have a simple JOP ceremony on a weekday, we figured Friday would be best for this. In a way this is kind of annoying, because by now August 7 is very easy to remember. Regardless, having it on a Friday seems like the best idea because it will be easier to schedule things with work, if nothing else. Also, I was hoping my sister-in-law might be available to go with us and be my witness and that would probably be easiest on a Friday.
So we began researching what might be a good day. Our research mainly consisted of reviewing the Wikipedia “on this day” pages to see what historical events occurred.
July 25 has almost nothing:
- Wyoming named a territory
- First transatlantic two way radio broadcast
August 1 was a pretty big winner:
- Octavian seizes Egypt
- Oxygen discovered, for real this time
- PLA founded
- First Jeep produced
- Last diary entry from Anne Frank
- University of Texas at Austin shooting
- Robert Todd Lincoln’s birthday
- Calamity Jane’s death
August 8 had a couple of interesting things but not that much going for it:
- Wright Bros first public flight
- The great train robbery
- General Lee tries to quit his job but Jeff Davis won’t let him
- Nixon does quit his job
August 22 has some interesting things, but not many:
- Teddy Roosevelt becomes first President to ride in a car
- Cadillac Motor Company founded
- Dorothy Parker’s birthday
August 29: worse than July 25 (Edit: suddenly better after comment)
- Oliver Wendall Holmes birthday
- Michael Jackson birthday
- Old roommate/next door neighbor birthday
Based on what we learned, it seems like August 1 is the most auspicious day for us to be married. So we’ll see if that works out. I don’t know that I will be able to take that day off from work, since we will be closing July then.

August 29th is also Michael Jackson’s birthday. I know this because I share it with him, and apparently Oliver Wendell Holmes. :(

Oh dang, and we had almost settled on August 8. Hmm. Oh, but lucky you, your birthday is on a Friday this month!
