101 Things, Month 1

3. Watch every episode of the X-Files. Watched episodes “Squeeze”, “Conduit”, “Jersey Devil”, and “Shadows” while working out in the mornings. Up to 6 of 202 episodes.

4. Vote in every election held during the 1,001 day period. I’ve already begun rationalizing this one and have decide that primaries don’t count. Mostly because since Giuliani dropped out, I don’t consider a single other candidate worth supporting, at least not enough to bother showing up. It’s basically all the same to me at this point.

8. Write 40 haiku without ever writing more than one in a single day. I made the no-more-than-one rule because haiku are the only form of poetry that I really like, and I tend to go on crazy haiku tears and write an entire volume in one sitting. I thought it would be more fun if I forced them to be spaced out. So here are #1 and #2.

12. See all 5 of the Best Picture nominees every year during the 1,001 days. Saw Juno on December 31. It was, like, the best.

13. Purchase an inexpensive GPS device and go on at least 5 geocaching expeditions. Shopped for a device, but decided to put off the purchase in order to buy a sewing machine sooner. Went geocaching with my new geocaching friend and her cousin.

17. Participate in the 365 day challenge Managed to get through every day except yesterday, which I forgot.  So I just picked it back up again today.

37.  Complete an intermediate level crochet project from start to finish.  I may have chosen what I want to crochet.  This, or this.  I’m counting these two as “intermediate” based on size and my previous inability to finish anything that requires too significant an attention span.

54.  Have dinner with my grandmother 10 times.  I went to my grandma’s squirrelly Christmas party on December 29.

56.  For 12 nonconsecutive months, prepare at least one new recipe during the month.  We tried a recipe for mushroom stew.  We didn’t like it much even though both of us are major mushroom fans.  I’m not going to bother posting anything about how to make it.  Ugh.

57.  Eat at 6 restaurants I have never visited before.  My boyfriend and I went to a restaurant called Noodles & Company in late December and have been back several times since then because we liked it so much.  They have a lot of good options for people who are trying to eat lighter.  We ran into my coworker friend there one day, too, which was exciting, and I got to meet her dad.

58.  Begin an (indoor or outdoor) herb garden with at least three types of herbs and maintain it in acceptably good health for at least 6 months.  I bought some live basil at Hen House on my way home from work one day and potted it.  It hasn’t done as well as I might have hoped.  I suspect the only reason it still lives is that my gamer coworker is the one who is actually supervising its care and preventing me from inadvertently killing it.  And uh, apparently the plants in the grocery store aren’t really intended for potting, I learned, even though they look like they are.

80.  For at least 46 nonconsecutive weeks, exercise at a moderate intensity at least 3 times during the calendar week, for at least 20 minutes each session.  For the weeks of 1/14, 1/21 and 1/28, I worked out 3 times or more.  Actually, I have worked out every day nearly two weeks running by now.

83. Finish painting the walls and trim in my living room, dining room, and second bedroom.  This has nothing to do with me, but on the day that I went geocaching with my new geocaching friend, my boyfriend took advantage of the fact that I was gone and painted the whole living room because I have been complaining about it for like over a year now.  He is so nice to me!  I was very happy.

85.  Reach my Weight Watchers lifetime fitness goal (3/21 lbs).  Due to all my intense exercise, I have lost 3 lbs since setting this goal.  I am now only 10.6 lbs away from being in the “healthy” range for my height.  Once I get there I have to maintain within 2 lbs of that figure for two months before I can stop paying for my WW meetings.

86.  Remember to write down what I eat at least 75% of the time.  Of the 36 days since I began, I journaled 20 of them for an overall rate of 56%.  I need to pick up the pace.  I just really hate having to take the time to write things down, although it helps keep me more disciplined.

96.  Blog no less than twice a week, for a minimum of 100 nonconsecutive weeks.   I did this successfully for 4 of the weeks since I began.  Last week was the only one where I didn’t manage it.  This getting up at 5:30 AM to exercise every morning is freaking wearing me out.

Thanks! I was on kind of a roll this first month. I need to sit down and do some more concrete planning so that some of the bigger ones won’t get away from me!
