Today officially marks the end of the holiday season. I like this because it signals a return to some semblance of normalcy. Especially when holidays fall in the middle of the week, it always disrupts my normal schedules and general perception of time. We went to my boyfriend’s father’s house for the weekend before Christmas. Rationally, I know this was only like 9 days ago. But it really feels like something we did three weeks ago. I think this is because coming to work Monday and being off Tuesday kind of resets my weekly timer. It’s like having a random weird Sunday in the middle of the week. So as a result, it feels like Christmas was like two weeks ago.
This year Christmas would have been on a Wednesday, except for the fact that 2008 will be a leap year, so it’s going to be Thursday. I foresee that since I’ll be eligible to take leave by then, I’ll be scheduling PTO for December 26 and January 2. That won’t relieve the pressure to give gifts and embody the holiday spirit, but it’s a start.
We gave the new year a proper send out. Last night we saw the 10:15 showing of Juno, which I loved and would be willing to watch up to 16 more times. When we got out it was 12:07 so we said happy new year to each other and decided to swing by his old roommate’s house. They were playing that rock band game on the X-Box when we got there and offered to let me do the vocal part. So I agreed. Flipping through the songs, the selection was not all that spiffy. I ended up singing to “Wanted Dead Or Alive” by Bon Jovi. It is not exactly my favorite “I’m a rockstar but no, really I’m a cowboy, seriously, they are exactly alike” song, also I felt stupid singing the part where he goes “AND I RIIIIIIIIIIDDE”. But in spite of this we had fun.
Today we had ham and beans and cut up all the leftover ham from Christmas day. The dog was very excited about this. For hours afterward she kept wandering back to the kitchen to see if anyone had turned the ham faucet back on for her. It was a good day for everyone. So, the holidays. They weren’t bad, but I’m sort of relieved to see them over. Now we can get back to the business of regular old life.
