Review: She’s Come Undone

Oh, no! Another Oprah book! I got this for 50 cents at Half Price Books one day and just finally got around to reading it. The description on the back made it sound like another totally generic and stupid book about some fat girl who has a terrible time because everyone is so judgmental and how she overcomes, bla bla bla and all that, then she either comes to terms with it, or gets skinny and is well loved and all her dreams come true. I almost didn’t read the book at all, but I was extremely sick and it was all I could reach from my bed.

The book wasn’t so bad. It is in fact about a girl who had a TERRIBLE THING happen to her at a young age, so she gets fat to insulate herself from other people and she is basically a rotten harpy. The book is about how she goes crazy, runs through a bunch of shit trying to fix herself and it doesn’t work, and then winds up not in a fake happily ever after, but a believable type of reasonably happy.

This book covers a wide variety of issues that makes books important, so I can totally see why Oprah would put it on her list:

  • Being Fat
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Rape
  • Homosexuality
  • Psychiatric Treatment
  • Mental Hospitals
  • Marriage
  • Relationships
  • Infertility
  • Abortion
  • Suicide
  • AIDS
  • Feminism
  • Biracial Children

There are others but I can’t think of them all right now, probably because I was sick. I was surprised, but this book wasn’t stupid and sappy, and I enjoyed it. I doubt I’ll read it again but I liked it well enough.
