Review: A Dog Called Kitty

This is an incredibly depressing tale of a boy who hates dogs who makes best friends with a dog after he saves it from starvation, only to have its life snuffed out by a passing truck, leaving him a shell of his former self. Also it saved him from attack by a feral hound. Although this is technically considered a children’s book because the author Bill Wallace typically writes children’s novels, I don’t recommend actually giving this to any child to read unless you want them to feel very sad for days, possibly weeks. Someone bought this book for me when I was about ten or so and although that was a long time ago and I don’t remember all the details of the experience, I assume I must have contemplated suicide at the time, because I reread it just after my 24th birthday and I felt despondent and dead inside for at least a day afterward. I hesitate to actually release this book because it could find its way into the hands of a hapless child somewhere, but maybe I can avoid this by releasing it somewhere that only adults congregate.
At least it’s not as depressing as The Bridge to Terabithia, which I don’t actually own, thank goodness.
