Just An Excitable Boy

Warren Zevon is dead. They played him all day on the radio in honor of his long-standing musical career. I guess his shit was fucked up.

Today was interesting and annoying in many ways. First off, partway through work today I decided to balance my drawer and make sure everything was fine with that. It wasn’t, and although it’s not precisely my fault, I haven’t really got anybody else to blame since it’s my fault for not noticing. In the cash drawers we often paperclip bundles of bills for ease of counting; twenties get clipped in stacks of twenty-five, tens go in stacks of ten, fives in stacks of twenty, and ones in stacks of twenty-five. In opening my drawer this morning I was in a bit of a hurry to get caught up, so I debated taking my stacks apart and counting them, but in the end opted not to in order to save time. Fool me once…well, shame on me. Anyway, I decided later in the day to take the bundles apart and turn all the bills to face the same direction, and in doing this I discovered that one bundle was missing two tens and one bundle was missing one fives. I alerted my roommate and the manager right away, explaining that since I hadn’t counted them before I knew that I couldn’t prove it wasn’t my fault, but that also since I hadn’t touched them all day other than to put them in the drawer, I knew it wasn’t my fault. They knew that, and I knew that, but I was pretty upset with myself for just not taking the time to count the damn drawer before opening it.

We eventually determined that the person on the drawer before me was the stupid part time girl who the manager’s been wanting to fire for some time. However, since I hadn’t discovered the shortage before opening my drawer, the shortage pretty much had to go on my drawer since we couldn’t prove it wasn’t my fault. So on the upside, the manager knows I wasn’t stealing, but it was still pretty upsetting. I guess I learned it a valuable lesson from it all. I think the general plan is to say nothing to part time girl and to allow her to believe she got away with it. Then when she ventures to try again, I’ll catch her because after this I plan to count my drawer religiously, and several times daily. I think her days at this company are now limited.
